A List to Keep Handy in Case you run Aground in the Boat

Running aground is just one of the hazards of operating a boat, and there’s a sequence to doing things right. The first thought should be of the crew’s safety. 

 

  1. The second move is for the captain to assess his own injuries and to see if there’s any shock. If so, hand the procedures to another shipmate.
  2. Grab a notebook and begin listing everything that happened, including the times they happened. Tide level, location and a geographic landmark is helpful.
  3. Use the VHF radio to reach the Coast Guard. Write down if the responding CG is from the US, Canada, etc.
  4. Request a no-wake zone around the boat for safety.
  5. Get a current weather forecast; know what is to come in the next 24 hours. Secure all seacocks and ports.
  6. Carefully calculate the way out. See which way the current is pushing at high tide and try to set the kedge anchor in the right direction.
  7. Make a drawing of the situation and what looks like the best way out, along with the biggest hazards.
  8. If possible, take heavy items to shore in the skiff. Remove as much weight as possible and if there’s a freshwater tank, drain it except for  minimal water to drink.
  9. With all this information the captain can assist any help that may arrive, whether from private boaters, ships or the Coast Guard.
Assessment of detail is the single biggest help in getting rescued; and it’s the best tool available to get the craft on the water and sailing again.

Keep this list handy so the captain knows what to do without having to remember it all.

There are a lot of difficult feats in sports but perhaps none more challenging than hitting a baseball. Running with a football and getting tackled is difficult but the actions involved are more predictable than hitting a baseball safely. Shooting NBA range three pointers in also hard, but without a defender in your way, you can get the range down with some practice. But try as they might, there are some athletes who have an incredibly hard time hitting a baseball. Here are three reasons why hitting a baseball is the most difficult thing to do in sports.

1.) The Ball Doesn’t Always Come in Straight- In addition to the straight fastball, there are also fastballs which can tail in or away from the hitter. Also, many pitchers posses a variety of breaking pitches. A curve ball has a different rotation than a fastball and will break down and away just prior to reaching the hitter. This makes hitting difficult.

2.) The Ball Is Changing Speeds- It’s difficult to pin down the timing of a pitcher when the balls are coming in at different speeds. A pitcher may throw a fastball at 90 mph but the next pitch could be a changeup that comes in at 6 miles an hour less.

3.) Even When You Hit It, You May Be Out- Even after you time the speed and pick up on the location and break of a pitch, you can hit it hard, and you will still usually be out. In baseball, you succeed if you get a hit 3 out of 10 times up, signifying just how hard it is to hit.

Your Hobby Can Become Your Income

Everyone has a passion. Plenty of times it exists outside of the work you do to give yourself a stable living. A hobby is what you do in your spare time, when you have the opportunity, but that doesn’t have to be the case. There are ways to turn your hobby into a career that pays the bills and gives you the freedom you want to spend the rest of your life doing what you love.

First you need to market what you do into a business. Whether it’s flying model airplanes or spending time at a casino you have to determine what skill set you can pull from that and put into a career that is more in line with doing what you love.

Once you have determined what it is you can do (and perhaps that will involve a little research or applying for existing jobs) the next thing you can do is be pro-active about generating business. If you like to put model airplanes together, perhaps assembling them at a mass rate and selling them to people is a way to go. If you buy in bulk you could sell at a profit.

No matter what the job is, the most important thing you can do is market yourself as an expert in that field. Look at other guys that are doing the kind of thing you want to do. How did they get there? What were they doing that you weren’t?

Don’t get discouraged. If you love something then it should be what you are doing for the rest of your life. Just keeping searching for the right avenue and everything will work out.

Over the past two years consumers have come to look at auto manufacturing in a completely different light. Many of the top brands in the industry have requested that customers bring their vehicles to the service department in order to install some type of fix for a mechanical error. The dilemma is that some of these “problems” have become major issues for consumers that faced negative consequences when their vehicle didn’t work like it was supposed to.

Model Building: Miniature Master Pieces

Model building once upon a time used to be in the opposite way which is, miniature models were first built and were tested upon for aero dynamics and other features and once this was approved then large scale manufacture of vehicles were done in mass production. In the present times people who are infatuated to the bigger models and can’t afford to buy them often go in for these types of miniature models.

The frenzy of collecting miniature models took a steep rise with the growing popularity of F1 Racing, as many people started identifying themselves with a particular car brand. As people couldn’t afford to keep these types of high end cars at home they started collecting smaller models.

Model building, as a hobby dated back to the ancient times where Egyptians built models for their pyramids and other structures. Thereby model building went through many phases, like from casual model building to professional building. Casual model building was done by amateur individuals and the size ratio varied from a person’s individual to that of the others. This was not the case with the professionals who indulged in model buildings as they had a standard format of building a miniature model of a ratio of 1:10 or 1:25. The beauty to his type of professional model building was that detail intricacies were being followed to make an exact copy of the original.

Therefore model building can also be considered as an art and its not as simply as it may look. Model building is a totally different kind of a hobby which not only requires a lot of attention but also a lot of hard work and patience.
